Plovdiv is known as the “City of Seven Hills”, today however, the seventh hill (tepe) could be seen only in the symbolic pave, built in Otets Paisyi Street, reminding of the undestroyable spirit of Plovdiv and Markovo tepe, which was destroyed from the end 19th to the mid 20th century.
Today, from the 6 syenite hills, the highest and the most remote from the ancient and modern city center is Dzhendem Tepe, also called Mladezhki Halm /Youth Hill/. The second highest is the Hill of Liberators which used to be called the Bunardzhik – “the hill of wells”, after the spring gushing between the rocks. Almost in the center of today’s city is the Sahat Tepe – the Clock Hill, named after the Roman sundial and water clock found there, as well as the Clock Tower which is still operating dated 16 – 17 century.
Inseparable from one another are the Three Hills /Jambas, Taxim and Nebet/, which gave the Roman name of the city. There is located the archaeological – historical reservation “Ancient Plovdiv”.
According to the historical sources there used to be two more hills – Kamenitsa, near the beer factory and Laut Tepe, today’s park Lauta. |
